From and for the Lord

June 5th, 2009

There are already plenty of good resources that pick apart Proverbs 31 so I won’t even try. I’ll just share one thought I had during my devotions through it.

Proverbs 31:10 “An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.”

Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

There is plenty of content that describes a godly woman found in this chapter. These are the bookends that encapsulate all that is said in between. Only the Lord can find her for she is from the Lord. (Prov 18:22, Prov 19:14) She is also one for the Lord. She is centered on God. She fears the Lord and keeps his commands.

I remember back to Christmas vacation when I talked with my old small group leader. She asked me what I was looking for in a girl. I think these days, during wedding season, I’m reminded that it’s so much more important that she love Jesus incredibly more than she could ever possibly love me. These verses also comfort me that she will be from the Lord. Marriage will come at the right time, whether it’s to a woman who fears the Lord or to Jesus himself when I see him face to face.
