Unmic’ed

June 1st, 2009

Yesterday I attended my friend’s church in Nebraska. It was a small English service with 50 people but wedding guests made up about 40% of that so their usual attendance is probably around 30 people. Their worship time was a vocalist accompanied by a piano. They sang songs older than me as well as some select hymns. They had a guest speaker from a local seminary to deliver the Word. All this was done without a mic because the congregation was so small.

It was a simple service – no sound system, no crazy worship band, no power point, video, or anything else one would consider modern. Just a bunch of ordinary people gathered together in an ‘under-construction’ fellowship hall to worship God. And I was blessed. The message was solid, better than I’ve heard at larger churches. I was encouraged to see the faithfulness of people. They would come each week to an unassuming place with nothing impressive in man’s eyes to faithfully serve the Lord. They came to meet God and God was surely in that place. It’s one thing to come to church with hundreds of other people, in a big church building with an awesome band and a cool hip Bible preaching pastor. It takes faith to worship and serve in a small church with only a piano and everything’s unmic’ed.
