What Does It Mean To Be Culturally Relevant?

March 13th, 2009

Culture has been on my mind lately. I’ve been discussing it with friends and it’s been the subject of articles I’ve been reading. I’m preparing a series that has to do with culture and the Word. Here’s the Sermon that started it all (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and the response.) This was even preached before this article ran in the news “‘Sex-y’ sermons, advertising on billboards cause stir in rural Alabama” .

I think the question is, how are we to preach (not just talk from the pulpit but in all the words we say) and act in a way that culturally relevant? I agree with Phil Johnson that we should not ‘stoop’ to their level. We should not denigrate our speech to make it more enticing. What kind of vernacular should we use when addressing this generation?

What about the content of what we talk about? Is it wrong to talk about Sex in the church, especially as it relates to God’s purpose? Is it wrong to talk about the LBS? Do you think Pastor Min does a good job at being culturally relevant in his Friday sermons? What do you think?
