Wrong Team, Wrong Time
Yesterday we had a superbowl party at my house. It was a matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. It is my opinion that the Cardinals shouldn’t have even gotten to the playoffs. There were teams with better records that didn’t make the playoffs. The Cardinals only made it b/c their division was incredibly bad. I also don’t like the way the Cardinals play. I’m a huge fan of smash mouth running teams. The Cardinals throw the ball. Period. Throwing first teams usually have a hard time in the winter months in cold weather stadiums. This was epitomized by their blow-out loss to New England, a team who should have made the playoff based on performance. Nevertheless, Arizona beat Atlanta and Carolina, two teams I like (both power running teams), so I guess they deserve to make the playoffs based on those two performances.
However, I really like Pittsburgh. They are a classy organization and they play the style of football I like. When the two matched up for the Superbowl, I rooted for Pittsburgh even though Kurt Warner is a Christian and I would like to see him win another Superbowl MVP.
During the game, Pittsburgh was winning and it was all good. However, Arizona started a comeback and many people, my vocal roommate included, were rooting for them. But in the final minute, Pitt scored for the win and I was happy but everyone else was sad. I felt like I was rooting for the wrong team. My joy was squelched by the somber attitude in the room. A few other people wanted Pittsburgh to win but it just wasn’t the same. I felt dirty for rooting against the favored team of the night. Alas, it was an unsatisfactory ‘W’. That and Willie Parker had a poor running night
