Some Insights.

October 10th, 2007

As I was thinking about the previous article (read it, it’s awesome) I found the response to be very insightful. It compares marriage to business and highlights the importance of life. He draws the audience to the conclusion that beauty if fleeting. It is a depreciating asset. Men should not marry for looks. He also highlights the woman’s shallowness. “If my money were to go away, so would you”. So many things are fleeting. As an “investment” we should develop things that are “increasing assets” or at least do not “depreciate”.

The immediate thing I thought of was character. Character is often a stable attribute. It can increase and decrease based on your decisions but at the same time, your decisions are based on your current character. A measure of character isn’t like a point on a plot, it’s more like a vector. A point on a plot but with direction and magnitude. Good character will continue in that direction. It is an increasing asset that will maturity and yield profit over time. It’s one of those things that doesn’t just benefit marriage or a relationship. It’s necessary for everything, from interacting with friends to job to church to handling life. As I ponder the future (probably spending too much time doing this) I realize that the best preparation is to learn how to take care of yourself. Like the guy said – if she made her own money, they wouldn’t be having this conversation. Preparing yourself to handle situations on your own will benefit you when you have to handle them with someone else – make yourself tough.
