ARMS!!!!!
Lessons from running:
Most people don’t know how important your arms are when you run. Most people don’t realize that you always swing opposite arm with opposite leg. (Try running or walking without moving your arms or moving same arm, same leg. It’s awkward.) Our track coach would have us stand in lines and practice swinging our arms for 10-15 minutes each practice, esp. in the beginning of the year to get us to run with good form. In our races he was always yell “ARMS!!!! ARMS!!!!!” The reason why was because swinging your arms helps you to run. When you walk, your arms naturally follow. The reverse is also true, if you swing your arms while you run, your legs will follow. When your legs are throbbing and don’t want to move, you focus on your arms to keep them swinging in rhythm and your legs will keep moving.
I was pondering this as I ran. Your arms, something not really connected to running, will help your legs to run. I saw the same dynamic relationship between the heart and the mind. Both of them are so intertwined that both are necessary for loving God more. We’d always say in small group, use which ever is stronger, your mind or your heart to love God more. When one is “failing”, use the other to keep this one going. As I pray and think about this summer, I feel I’m quite lopsided. I need to develop my heart. I don’t want to be someone who just thinks and knows what to do but someone who desires and feels like it. I want to be someone who is passionate about the glory of God.
