A Mom Who Loves
If you don’t know, my new favorite show is Friday Night Lights. I feel like it’s a show of a dying breed of television. Shows with a message that contain good moral values. There’s plenty of action shows with ‘pointless violence’, drama for the sake of drama and suspense, comedy that may just be funny without having any social commentary. All just pure entertainment with little ‘value added’. Anyways, one of the characters on FNL keeps getting better the more they bring her out.
She’s Brian “Smash” William’s mother. In one of the earlier episodes, she turns Brian into his coach because she catches him using steroids. She jeopardizes his entire football career (though he already has by using steroids) to teach him about integrity. The latest episode deals with racism and she helps her son to rise about the racism evident in the town and on the team. She teaches him how to be wise and play their ‘game’; how to make a point and rise above the system. She doesn’t let him and the other boys throw out their football careers protesting a racist coach by telling them they made their point and to prove their coach wrong on the field with their performance. The directors do a fantastic job of showing Smash ‘rising above’ the animosity on the field and true character shining through. His mom is a woman who instills wisdom and develops his character through sound principles and discipline.
