Purity
Word association: Purity.
Words that come to mind are innocent, abstinent, naive, untainted. But what is purity? God tells us to be pure. If I look at this list of words, it’s too late. I’ve already messed up. I’ve already sinned. Can I still be pure?
What does it mean to purify? I like this definition of pure from Google: Free of impurities. Looking up pure, purity, and purify in the Bible, when it talks about the heart, it’s usually used in conjunction with righteousness and blameless and opposed to wickedness. The OT references purify as an act that separates us from sin, set apart for God. Free from the impurities of sin. It’s the idea of running away from sin and but also running towards God. Actively choosing God over other things, things that contaminate, that divide our hearts. Having an undivided heart for God.
But my heart’s divided, tainted. There’s dual motive in all that I do. I can’t get rid of this sinful nature until I reach Heaven so what am I supposed to do? I think it’s about our focus. The good nature – pure Spirit’s nature. Actively choosing to grow our good nature, having the correct motive. Purity is a choice between wickedness and righteousness; selfishness and Christ-centeredness.
Is God the highest desire of my heart? My highest priority? Is right now the moment when I love Jesus the most?
Cleanse me from within and make me holy.
Purify me heart
Cleanse me from my sin deep within.
Make me pure.
