Rant: CFC Living – Part 4

October 23rd, 2006

If you haven’t read any of my other rants on this subject, you can check them out here:

Please note that some of these were written awhile ago so I may not have said the wisest things. What is more important is the heart of the matter.

That said, this one is all about living in apartments. I no longer live in the dorms, though I wish I could. Even some of the dormers tell me I should but alas, my years there are done. However, for many, they still have that opportunity and I’ve been told that some aren’t taking the opportunity to stay in the dorms. I was thinking about addressing them, but I realize they aren’t the ones necessarily at fault. Problems always start with the leadership.

We as CRH servants and coservants, need to be the ones living in dorms. Yeah, we can’t actually live there but how many of us are spending time there on a consistent basis? Do we know people outside of those in our small groups? We need to be spending time in the dorms among the people we are supposed to reach and setting the example for them.

Gone are the days of people living at Gabe’s place. I remember my sophomore year when CRH leaders occupied atleast 3 apts there and some more in Arbor. Yeah, they were run down, but their place was always open to us dormers to play video games or watch movies with them. Not too many of us apt people now live within walking distance of 6pack. Come to think of it, not too many CRH leaders even live in Champaign. I know alot of people are buying places so they’re living way out in Urbana or Savoy, but what about the rest of us? What’s our excuse for not living close to the dorms? I’m strongly leaning towards living somewhere on Gregory – as close to the dorms as possible. Yeah, the apartments there are expensive dumps and don’t have a covered parking spot but I didn’t choose to stay here to have a comfortable life. George Verwer challenged us to say “Here am I, send me” but can we say “Here am I, send me to Gabe’s place”?

We can’t expect our dormers to sacrifice the benefits of apartments (which out way benefits of dorms) for the sake of Kingdom ministry when we are unwill to sacrifice nice apartments to leave near the dorms.
