Driving in China

June 16th, 2006

When driving in China:

  • Pay attention, someone may be driving going the wrong way in your lane.
  • Be prepared to be cut off.
  • It’s okay to cut other people off.
  • Whoever was there first, goes first, even if they don’t have the right of way. This also applies to whoever is bigger goes first.
  • Use horn liberally and often.
  • Lane markings are just a suggestion. I’ve seen 5 lanes of cars on 3 marked lanes in the highway.
  • Hire a professional driver. Their cheap and come with their own car.

Seriously, driving in China was a bit scary. People cutting off everyone else all the time. Horns blaring non-stop. Jerky stop go from all the cutting. I usually went to sleep so I didn’t have a heart attack or get sick.
