Lessons from a Plant, Part 2 – Root Volume
House plants are nice because you can grow them in pots and move them around and take them with you. However, the pot will also restrict the growth of the plant’s roots. The plant can only grow as much as the pot will support. We started our camomile in these tiny plastic starter pots. When it came time measure our plants, the camomile had grown so much that the roots grew out the small drainage holes and formed a twisted network outside the pot. I planned on repotting mine so I tried to strip away the plastic pot w/o damaging the roots but alas, I had to cut the roots to remove the plant. A few days after repotting the camomile in a bigger pot, the plants shot up. The plants were able to take advantage of the larger pot and grew greatly. The pots had been restricting their growth.
We’re the same way. Our vision as Christians restricts our spiritual growth. When we have small vision of what God can and will do, our growth is limited. Our small sight and small living makes for a ‘small god’. Growth means getting out of our comfy pots and being transplanted, taking on new environments, responsibilities, dreams and goals with a bigger God who can do the ‘impossible’, transform the inert, move mountains, break the indestructable, and ‘do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.’ You want to grow as a Christian? Get out of your comfortable pot and be transplanted into exciting ventures for God.
