DWI Story

March 28th, 2006

Before you start hearing rumors or third party stories, hear the DWI story first hand. We were on our way back home from Utah on our spring break. We stopped in New Mexico for some good authentic Mexican food. We got back into the car and I began making my way back onto the highway with Curtis navigating me. Some 30-45 minutes later, I look in my rearview mirror. Red and blue lights flash me. I glance down and see my speedometer read 57 and I know the speedometer’s a little fast. Great, I got pulled over for going 5-7 miles over the speed limit. Just great. I’ve gotten some speeding tickets in the past and it’s totally not worth the time saved for the cost of the ticket (unless on a long road trip) so I’m pretty concious of not speeding too much. The officer comes up behind me and says I’m blah blah from blah blah blah county police. I pulled you over because someone reported you as a possible DWI because you were swerving … blah blah … license and registration … blah blah blah. I couldn’t really hear him cuz I was astonished. Maybe I was changing lanes pretty fast cuz we were trying to make our way onto the highway in a strange area, but DWI? I became furious and angry. There was no way I was driving while intoxicated cuz I haven’t been drinking! He asked me to get out of the car and I thought to myself- “Shoot, make me walk a straight line. Gimme a breathalyzer, there’s NO WAY I’m getting a DWI.” So I’m out of the car by the sidewalk and he’s shining his flashlight in my eyes. Great, my face is all red from being sunburned. I bet that just makes him think I’m more drunk. He asks me all these questions about where I’m from, where I’m going, what I was doing. I tell him we’re driving from Utah to Illinois and we just had dinner and I only drank soda. He tells me to follow his finger with my eyes as he flashes his light in my face. Then he tells me to get back into the car. I get back in and all my friends are making jokes. I was the first and only one to get pulled over during the trip and it wasn’t even for speeding. Some 10 minutes later, the officer hands me back my license and registration and tells us to drive safely. Made us waste like 15-20 minutes. Atleast we know they aggressively handly drunk driving in New Mexico. Everyone was how we shoulda taken a picture with the cop to immortalize the moment. I’d rather not.
