What are you giving up for Lent?

March 3rd, 2006

Lent is upon us and I find it interesting hearing what people give up. I’ve been learning alot about the concept of Highest Desire and it’s interesting applying it to Lent. Some people asked me what they should give up and I think I stepped on a few toes. I suggested one of my friends give up basketball and he immediately became defensive. I told another friend she should give up AIM which was met with a look of terror and a comment “Do you want me to become anti-social and have no friends?” or something like that. (She did decide to give it up later). I feel a good way to know what you should give up is to ask people who know you well what you should give up? If you get really defensive and start justifying like crazy about not-giving up something, it’s a good indicator that it’s a pretty high desire of yours. The heart of Lent is giving up to make God your highest desire. I feel many people give up all these low desires but keep their high ones. There’s a little bit more room for God but he’s still in a struggle to be #1 in your life. Give up that highest desires and replace it with God.
