The downfall of the America Church

December 13th, 2005

I read an article (CNN NY Times) on certain megachurches closing for Christmas because it falls on a Sunday. Ms. Kim didn’t say the name of one of the churches during servants meeting but if you read the articles, you know exactly which church is the shocker. I cannot believe a church of that repute would close for worship. On God’s holy day, a day we celebrate his coming to earth, they don’t want to open their doors and instead tell people to go home. Who needs Satan to put our light when we’re putting it out ourselves. How can we argue saying Happy Holiday’s instead of Merry Christmas when we won’t stand up but instead give in to this consumer approach to church. They give reason of closing their doors because of decrease in attendance. Since when was the church concerned with attendence? Do we cater to what people want or do we stand for what is right and gather as a body of believers to celebrate our Lord Jesus’ birthday? You cannot lead a church and give into people’s consumerism. It leads to compromise and things like this.

Staff members at [a megachurch] said they had had few complaints from members about the church closing on Christmas. Said the Rev. Mark Ashton, whose title is pastor of spiritual discovery: “We’ve always been a church that’s been on the edge of innovation. We’ve been willing to try and experiment, so this is another one of those innovations.” An innovation to close church? I thought innovations were modifications that lead to improvement. How is closing church an improvement? Sounds to me like his warped thinking is playing into the Enemy’s hands. What is sadder is that only a few people objected. Mob mentality isn’t caused by hysteria. People know what their doing and show their true selves because they are hidden in the mob. I sure hope the lack of complaints does not show the true selves of all the people who regularly attend these megachurches.

“Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” – Joshua 24:14-15. Serve your gods of convenience, materialism, public pressure, or idolatry, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
