Macintel

June 6th, 2005

Mac switching to Intel chips. Wow! This is a bold move. One thing Apple had going for them was their monopoly on the Mac Hardware and Mac OS. If you wanted a mac, you ran Tiger. If you want to use Tiger you have to buy a mac. It’s a monopoly. That’s one of my biggest (original) grips against Apple. The lack of customizability and upgradability with the hardware. You got what you got, right out of the box. No upgrades, very little mixing and matching. I’m not talking like more ram or HD’s, more like vid cards, sound cards, tv cards, etc. As a “computer enthusiast, I do not want to be limited by my hardware. But now, using Intel, that has the good potential to use any current hardware that’s out for PC’s. The question is will Mac stop closing off their hardware to third party. That would be great. To have a pretty outside with something substantial on the inside! Not only that, but you could run Tiger on your pc! I’m not a Windows lover; I’ve tried 5+ flavors of Linux. I’m just using what’s the most convient which happens to be Windows and I’ll give Tiger a shot if I don’t have to go out and buy their own proprietary hardware to go with it. I think it would benefit Mac and computer users all around if they opened out their hardware and software to 3rd party vendoers.
