ipod bandwagon
I almost gave in last night and bought an iPod. A number of recent developments have changed my mind on the iPod. First there was the Winamp iPod plugin. Now I wouldn’t have to Apple’s iTunes. No need to violate my computer like that. There’s also jhymn (which has been around for awhile) that will let you convert your AAC music purchased from iTunes plus there’s PyMusique a linux alternative to iTunes which doesn’t restrict your music. But yeah, on eBay, you can get iPods for decently cheap. My roommate got his 15 gig 3G for 125 or so. We’ve also considered building our own from parts. If we do that, I’ll try to get 1.8″ 80 gig. 80 gig’s of iPod-ness. But it’s gotta be 3G cuz you can’t install linux on a 4G.
Speaking of tech gadgets, I’ve got a list of stuff to buy that keeps on growing. Besides the iPod, I’ve got in (rough order of importance):
- A gigabit switch to match my router for my network expansion of a real DMZ and dedicated firewalls.
- Linksys NSLU2 for network storage, iTunes / media server. That or the cheaper Kuro Box.
- A fast 19″ LCD would also be nice.
- Definately need nice speakers since mine’s only a 3+1 “surround” sound since one of them(I couldn’t find my set cuz their so old) blew out. But I’ll also need
- a new sound card cuz my media box doesn’t have a front left channel (which sorta works out with my blown speaker) but also I can get surround sound instead of stereo on my laptop. I probably won’t get these two till I “settle” down and get a place. I don’t like moving around w/ lotta stuff.
- I’d also like one of these Mobilis when they come out. Linux based laptop that runs for 6 hours, weighs 1.65 lbs, and for less than 350USD? If they’d only ship now in the US . . .
I think that concludes the list of stuff I want which comes out to about 1380USD. While I’m at it, through in one of these Flat panel arms for 160USD. We have them at work. SO nice. How else am I supposed to work on three boxes simultaneously? Of course with this kind of money, I could support a native missionary for over two years. I will be a good steward of God’s money and not give in to my technophilia and probably just buy the switch this summer and possibly the iPod. We’ll see . . .
