slashdot effect

May 23rd, 2005

I’m a nerd. I read slashdot. The most interesting thing about slashdot, besides their articles, is the effect that it causes, commonly termed ‘slashdot effect’. While it has waned over the years, being posted on slashdot generates a spike in your web traffic. This will lead to DOS (denial of service) attacks from too much publicity. Rather ironic if you ask me, bad thing happens to you because of too much of a good thing. Many sites deal with this by changing their layout so it’s less bandwidth intensive. Today, I’ve been blocked from sites because of this increase in traffic. Usually I’ll look at websites the next day as to avoid this cause and effect. When software is concerned, it also leads to a spike in downloads and usuage. I dunno, thought that was interesting to share.

The boring part of my life, I had an interview today with my sister office. They write the tools that we use. I went through this ‘gauntlet’, a test that’s designed for you to fail. Well, I think they skipped some of the harder questions because I haven’t covered everything in school, namely my OS Design and Networking courses. They did ask me to do two x86 assembly questions. Since our school is dumb and doesn’t teach CS majors x86 and instead MIPS, I had a hard time with the syntax. Afterwards, I talked with the guys and they said I did alright and I got further than most other people. I think they toned it down cuz they were upsetting GG-14s (Exec. lvl people) with their questions. We’ll see if they want me full time and if they’ll pay for my grad school and let me only work part time, then we’ll seee. I wouldn’t mind working there, they’re pretty cool.
