Rant: CFC Living Part 3

Question: Dorms or Apartments?
This is my questions, not just to all those moving out of dorms, but even to myself. I’m going to be a 5th year next year. I have the option for Apt. or dorm. Both are good, which is better? I’ll just list off the pros/con for each.
Apartments

  • My own space
  • It’s cheaper for me.
  • Location for small group
  • Cook for members
  • Live with older guys.
  • Live with friends
  • Location to park car
  • CONS
  • Little exposure to non-Christians.
  • Little exposure to Freshmen
  • Far from small group members.

Dorms

  • Expanded ministry opportunities.
  • Easy access to build relationships with non-Christians.
  • Easy access to help Freshmen and make them feel welcomed. Esp you out-a-staters.
  • Location for small group. (Access to tunnels and corner triple).
  • Ability to flex people (small group dinner and prayer partners).
  • Close proximity to small group members.
  • CONS
  • Lack of personal space.
  • A little more expensive
  • 5th year in dorms may seem a little out of place.
  • Less contact with people my age/older people

Looking at the list, seems about even, maybe favoring apartments more. The benefits I see in apartment are for myself. I can get my own space, save my money, live with my friends. The main benefits for dorm living are kingdom benefits. Access to younger people and non-Christians. Ability to flex small group. Thinking about John Teter, alot of his stories were about people he met in dorms and the effect you can have in ministry. Never again will I get to live in dorms tho I’ll live in an apt when I graduate. Never again will I have the opportunity to talk to people in the bathroom where they can’t run from me. Never again will I have to opportunity to play with Freshmen till they realize how important studying is. But never again will I get the opportunity to live with many of the people I’d like to live with. There are benefits to living in apartments but many Kingdom benefits for living in dorms. Choose wisely.
