No school today! I figured it would have enough time to get my linux hooked up to the internet so I could start using it. I boot into knoppix and I can connect to the internet and get my tv card working (though it looked REALLY bad). So that’s all good so then I try to boot into slackware. I try to log in and lo and behold, I forgot my linux password. I tried everything I could think of. So then I tried to hack it. I booted back into knoppix so I’d have access to my passwd file. I look up in my hacking book and find Hacking Unix. Good deal so I give it a whirl, no good. I get a few brute force cracks, Crack 5.0a and John the Ripper. I couldn’t compile Crack, I’m a *nix n00b. I left John running for 3+ hrs to no avail. Then I try manually guessing, no avail all the while bouncing idea’s off a good buddy from work. (Where the ‘legit’ hackers work
). He gave me a good idea that would be much faster then a brute force hack. After a few keystrokes, I was able to get back into my system! Go me, I successfully hacked my linux box locally!
