Rant: CFC Living – Part 2
Okay, I don’t think I was being fair to the other side in my rant below. It may come across as I’m condemning you for living in a place like Garner, but I’m not (really). My philosophy class has taught me a little more how to argue so I shall argue my point. I’ll now give some counter arguments and refutes.
1. There’s nothing wrong with living w/ Christians. I’m not breaking any rules by it.
Well, yes and no. No, there’s nothing SPECIFICALLY wrong with it. But what about the great commissions. Are you staying true with that? Are you still witnessing to non-christians? Another refute is life isn’t about what is good or bad, it’s about what is better. I’ve been learning this slowly, and Pastor Min mentioned it today. It’s not about how far you can stray from God but still be okay, it’s how close you can get. If you’re a person that needs to be sheltered from a secular world and would just fail in your faith if you weren’t, then it would be better for you to be in that environment. If you would grow more and be stretched and make a difference in another person’s life if you had the chance to witness to them, would that not be better? It’s good to live with Christians as I’ll address in my next point, but it’s better to witness and make a difference to non-Christians. Christ did not die to take us out of this world but to protect us in this world. Surrounding yourself with Christians is ALMOST like taking yourself out of this world. You lose alot of secular influence and I’m not quite sure that’s what Christ wants for us.
2. Being around Christians is good for you, it is encouraging and they help me to live a more godly life.
I agree, being around Christians is good. We need the fellowship and support, but how many Christians do you need? Is one good roommate enough? A whole floor? A whole dorm? Do you need that much of a support? This sort of encompassing environment bubbles you and it’s no wonder life gets hard when you leave, you lose this protective shell. You’re not used to being in the world as much. You can still live in other places and get the same support. A spider web is quite strong. If you were to pack it all in a ball, it would still be strong but less effectives.
3. I wanna live with all my friends.
And you can’t do this else where? This was my main motive for moving to Snyder. Alot of my friends and guys in my major were there so it made sense from this persepective, but I did not lose the envangelistic perspective either. I kept a non-christian roommate and lived on farther down from my friends instead of next door. You can still live near your friends and at the same time reach out.
4. We can witness in Garner.
I’m not going to say you’re wrong but let’s be realistic. To me, this seems like a really stupid argument. As if the 30 people living there already aren’t enough to witness.
I hope that has you convinced.
It’s your choice where to live. You’re never going to get these years in the dorms back. Make the most out of them.
